Comnments on Phillies Nation 2007 List of Top 100 Phillies of All Time

Phils Whiz Kid Stan "Stash" Lopata.  Don't Know what he was Stashing, but he was great defensively, & he hit the Long Ball.
Comments on the Phillies Nation List of Top 100 Phillies 2007 & 2014 - the 2014 List not Done Yet

Phillies Nation List of Top 100 Phillies of All Time
Comments
      Rank Phils Player (2008 edition)
Mike Schmidt Natch
Steve Carlton Roberts should be ahead of Carlton.  Higher Peak Value & Higher Career WAR.
Robin Roberts Carlton has a higher JAWS, but Roberts has a higher JAWS7,
Ed Delahanty Meaning Roberts peak 7 seasons were better than Carltons.
Pete Alexander Alexander's Career WAR is 117.  If he had spent his entire career with the Phils, he'd be #1, easily.
Richie Ashburn Utley climbed higher after 2008.
Dick Allen Allen should be lower, though his peak seasons were very fine.
Chuck Klein Utley, Abreu & Rollins are all ahead of Klein now.
Sam Thompson goes lower.  He played in the 1890, 7 run a game baseball.  His Phillies WAR was @ 30.  Ennis was better
Bobby Abreu Abreu is the real deal but Rollins will pass him in the next two years.
Sherry Magee Sherwood "Sherry" Magee is actually a top ten Phillie
Curt Schilling Schilling  had @ 81 career WAR so if the Phils don't trade him, he's #2 on the all-time list.  Bad Trade.
Billy Hamilton Roy Thomas, a U Penn grad, was actually a better leadoff man than Billy Hamilton.
Jim Bunning Cole Hamels has passed Jim Bunning and Chris Short on this list, & will pass Curt Schilling
Cy Williams He played in the 1920s when runs were cheap--good but not top 20.
Del Ennis Del Ennis has always been underrated.  He was very, very good.
Greg Luzinski Greg Luzinski is not this good at all.  He and Ryan Howard are grossly overrated.
Gavvy Cravath Close but has been passed by Rollins, Utley & Hamels.
Jimmy Rollins Rollins has moved up a lot since 2008.
Johnny Callison Johnny Callison is one of the greatest Phillies ever, and also grossly underrated.
Chris Short close but goes a bit higher
Pat Burrell his defense puts him much lower than this
Tug McGraw hard to evaluate bullpen guys. His actualy career WAR for Philly is 9.7, so he could rank around 95th.  He did have a WAR of 4.7 in 1980, so his single season impact was immense that year.
Chase Utley Obviously one of the greats alltime.
Ryan Howard Has declined sharply since 2008, his defense is bad.
Garry Maddox Secretary of Defense.
Curt Simmons  42.7 career WAR if the Phils don't trade him he's top ten on the all time list.
Scott Rolen 70 career WAR #2 to Schmidt on this list if the Phils don't stupidly trade him.  Horrible trade.
Juan Samuel career phils WAR was 13; does not belong on top 100 Phillies list.
Fred Luderus deadball era slugger but does not rank this high.
Larry Bowa
Bob Boone 12.9 WAR as a phil, but 32.4 WAR career.  Trading him was a huge mistake.  Ranks around 85th on this list, but he doesn't really belong because his best years were for the Angels.
John Kruk .400 career OBA with a high slugging average.  To date, generated more WAR in five seasons than Howard or Luzinski in many more.
Von Hayes  Ranks higher.  Good defender, good speed, hit, hit for power, walked a lot, doubles machine.
Lenny Dykstra Had an 8.9 WAR in 1990 & 6.5 in 1993.  Ferocious will to win.  4 HR in 1993 World Series. Ranks higher.
Nap Lajoie Nap Lajoie had 107 career WAR had he not jumped to the As would be #1 on this list
Darren Daulton just about right for Dutch
Manny Trillo 6.8 WAR in 4 seasons for the Phils does not get him on the top 100 with guys like Utley or Rollins.
Mike Lieberthal yes but not this high
Cole Hamels Has risen considerably since 2008; will end up as a top ten on this list.
Jack Taylor good early pitcher but goes lower.  Cliff Lee continues to rise up the list.
Dolph Camilli 12.9 WAR for Phils in 4 seasons, 42 plus WAR career + MVP would have made top ten on this list.  He's only 85th on his list, but top ten if he's not traded to the Dodgers.  One of the worst trades every for the Phillies.
Ron Reed Effective reliever, like Ryan Madsen, but he's much lower than this.
Schoolboy Rowe journeyman pitcher, ranks in bottom ten of top 100.
Dick Sisler Dick Sisler hit a famous HR in 1950, but he's not among the top 100 Phils ever.
Eppa Rixey Eppa Rixey had a career 56 plus WAR and would be 4th on this list if the Phils had not stupidly traded him away to the Reds.  He and Pete Alexander were the rocks of the 1915 pennant winning rotation.
Pinky Whitney In the top 100 but does not belong this high.
Steve Bedrosian 4.2 WAR in four-five phils seasons, and he didn't deserve his Cy Young in 1987. Not a top 100 guy. Liked his beard, though.
Lefty O'Doul 12 WAR in only two seasons for the Phils.  He ranks either way lower or not at all.
Earl "Crossfire" Moore just about right.
Tony Gonzalez career 24.4 WAR with phils, actually ranks much higher.
Roy Thomas career 36.5 WAR with phils, is 13th best overall.  Should be in HOF.  One of best leadoff men ever.
Larry Christenson 83 career wins but only 9.1 career WAR leaves him out of the top 100.  Avg pitcher for a great team.
Pete Rose net 1.2 WAR in five seasons with Phils.  He helped Schmidt become great, but he doesn't belong.
Terry Mulholland he's in the low 80s on our list.
Andy Seminick about right.  Roy Halladay in two effective seasons was just as good as many season of Andy Seminick.
Johnny Moore 8.0 WAR in 4 seasons with Phils in 1930s doesn't make the top 100
Randy Wolf top 100 but around 85th.
Willie Montanez 3.6 WAR in 5 seasons doesn't make top 100.  trading him for Garry Maddox was brilliant, though.
Ron Northey 8.6 WAR in 5 wartime seasons and part of a sixth in 1957 doesn't make the top 100.
John Denny not far off.  Denny should be a few slots down.
Deron Johnson wasn't on phils long enough to get on the top 100.
Lee Meadows Who????
Eddie Waitkus only 5.9 WAR in 5 and some seasons with Phils.  Doesn't make top 100.
Willie Jones Willies Puddinhead Jones, on the other hand, had 24.3 WAR playing a key defensive position, and is 34th on this list; a very underrated member of the Whiz Kids, one of the better 3d basemen of the 1950s
John Titus superb deadball player, 29th overall
Al Orth Al Orth had 23.4 WAR just for Phils; the Curveless Wonder had career WAR 44.1 so he's top 10 if he doesn't jump to AL in 1902
Dick Ruthven 7.7 overall WAR in several seasons with Phils, but only one really decent season, 1980.  not top 100.
George Wood 4.5 WAR in 4 seasons, not top 100.  Charlie Ferguson would have been a better choice.
Bob Miller #100 but Dom Brown or someone else will knock him off this list eventually.
Jim Konstanty tied for #100.
Jimmy Ring we have him just ahead of Spud Davis at #59.
Dutch Leonard close, 12.9 WAR for phils puts him at #85.
Ryan Madsen Mad Dog's 8.9 WAR in his years with the Phils, and his steady work from 2007-11 deserve consideration for the top 100, even if his WAR is a couple of points below the line.  He was great.
Jay Johnstone In 1976 the platoon of Downtown Ollie Brown and Jay Johnstone had a WAR of 4.9.  Johnstone alone had a WAR of 9.0 in his 5 seasons with the Phils.  That doesn't  make the top 100, but he and Brown are still my favorite Phillies ever.
Bake McBride 12.2 WAR for Phils in 5 seasons, career 22.6 WAR, great glove & great baserunner. Shake n' Bake should be #86 on our list.
Freddy Leach
Tully Sparks goes much higher on the list.
Jim Thome
Brett Myers
Jim Lonborg
Rick Wise
Hans Lobert
